THE MIDFIELDER                                         SEPTEMBER 2014

2014 MIDWEST CLASSIC TOURNAMENT

Our 2014 Fall Tournament series began with the 2014 Midwest Classic, held over the weekend of August 29th to the 31st. We were very fortunate to be able to complete all of our tournament games during severe storms which delayed both the Sporting Kansas City and Royals games. In between, the 160 teams who participated enjoyed perfect conditions for the rest of the weekend in which to compete for the honor of being named Champions.

Congratulations to all teams, with a special mention below to the Champions and Finalists.

We are now looking forward to another fantastic event, the 2014 Mid-West All Girls tournament, to be held on October 10th - 12th. The Girls and Boys Verizon Heartland Invitational tournaments will follow in the first two weeks of November.

Thank you for your support, we look forward to seeing you again soon.

SWOPE SOCCER VILLAGE

Heartland is very excited to be adding another top notch facility for our Fall 2014 season.

We began hosting games at Swope Soccer Village, the official training facility of Sporting KC, on September 5th.

The complex has recently undergone a huge change to it's already fantastic set up. We will have access to five 'state of the art' turf fields for 6v6, 8v8 and 11v11 games. These world class fields will allow more of our games to be played on some of the best soccer surfaces in the country.

PINK OUT with HCA Midwest Health

HCA Midwest Health and its Johnson County hospitals, Menorah Medical Center and Overland Park Regional Medical Center, are celebrating breast cancer awareness month in  many ways, but none will be more exciting than when they help turn the Overland Park Soccer Complex "Pink" October 10-12 during Heartland Soccer's Midwest All Girls Tournament .

As the official healthcare providers for Heartland Soccer Association, the hospitals are creating a fun and unique atmosphere for the Midwest All Girls soccer tournament by literally "Pinking Out" the event. Participants and fans who attend the event will see referees using pink flags and some will even dress in pink. Fans will also notice that the fields will feature pink corner flags. Finally, the entire tournament staff at Overland Park Soccer Complex will sport pink shirts, including the Corner Kick Café concession employees.

The weekend's pink presence is designed to call attention to October's Breast Cancer Awareness Month and remind women to get their mammogram. Menorah Medical Center and Overland Park Regional Medical Center will have a display exhibit at the event which will showcase its state-of-the-art da Vinci Xi surgical robot that is used by many surgeons. The da Vinci Xi 3D-HD image can be magnified up to 10 times, allowing a surgeon an unprecedented close-up view of the area being operated on. Guests who stop by the exhibit will also have the opportunity to win great prizes. For additional details on other breast cancer awareness events at the hospitals please visit oprmc.com and menorahmedicalcenter.com.

                                                 PRESIDENTS CUP NATIONALS

CONGRATULATIONS TO U13 BOYS OPSC MONACO

Congratulations to Overland Park Soccer Club (OPSC)'s U13 Boys Monaco team and their coach, Christophe Nicot. They proudly represented Region 2 at the Presidents Cup Nationals in Greenville, South Carolina this past July and tied for third place. "I am extremely proud of these boys. Despite losing their first preliminary games in the tournament, their spirits did not diminish. They fought hard in their last game and even came back from a deficit to tie a team 3-3 from Pennsylvania," noted coach Nicot. To reach Nationals, Monaco had to first win the Kansas Presidents Cup tournament. Next was Regionals. Playing "at home" for Regionals at the OP Complex was so exciting and winning their championship game 1-0 against a very strong team from Illinois was a dream come true!

So, Nationals were next.   Monaco had never traveled for a tournament before as their coaches and parents strongly believe that the best competition comes to the OP fields. Needless to say, the boys' first tournament away from home was a big one! They fundraised as much as they could in less than 4 weeks and OPSC generously contributed funds towards a portion of their team bus which drove for 18 hours to Greenville. Memories were made not only on the pitch, but off the pitch as well. At Nationals, Monaco participated in a Player Event, where they met soccer players from all over the country, even as far as Alaska! Monaco happily traded their pins donated by Heartland and bags of sunflower seeds, as Monaco was the only team representing their state of Kansas in the tournament. In addition, Chris Duke, Executive Director of KYSA, came to Greenville and cheered on Monaco while giving the boys KYSA Frisbees to trade with their opposing teams in preliminaries.

Congratulations to Monaco on a fun and exciting tournament!

                      Congratulations to the

REFEREE APPRECIATION NIGHT

Heartland Soccer Association and Sporting Kansas City want to say thank you to our referees by having a referee appreciation night on September 18.

Referees can purchase discounted tickets (for yourself and for your friends and family) to the CONCACAF Champions League game on September 18.  Sporting Kansas City will play Deportivo Saprissa in this Group Stage Match.

At half-time, referees only (no friends and family) are invited to be recognized as a group while parading at field level.  Pictures will be taken and made available later.  To be able to access the field level and join the parade, referees will need to stop by the Heartland office, 9161 W 133rd Street, Overland Park, KS, and pick up a wristband.  Without the wristband, there is no access to the field level.

Purchase your group tickets using this link and the password 14refs.

Congratulations to our referees and their accomplishments!

Kyle Atkins refereed his first MLS match on 8/23/14 (Columbus Crew vs Houston Dynamos).

This past summer Kyle was invited to Denmark to officiate games at the U17 Open Nordic Tournament.

Ryan Cook and Devin Blazek have made their debuts in the USL and NWSL this month.

Peyton Sanders from Wichita and Emily Stalcup from Overland Park have been selected as Kansas Young Referees of the Year. This is a tremendous honor and achievement, which is richly deserved by both these young referees for the work they do in the Kansas referee community. Both Peyton and Emily will now also be nominated for the Region II award which will be announced in October.
