There will be two shows: 3:00 and 7:00 pm. Each show will have a different cast however, if you are available for either time, please register for both shows.  There may be situations that will require certain models to be cast for both show times.  Registration is for those interested in modeling during the event and does not guarantee participation.  The deadline to register to be considered is Friday, September 8th.  After the deadline, the Selection Committee will look through all of those who registered for consideration, and make sure there is a variety of teams represented.  All individuals selected to walk in the shows will be notified no later than September 11th and will be announced in the September newsletter.

TO REGISTER FOR CONSIDERATION  Click here

Please choose the "ticket" based on the model's gender, age and the show they can participate.  Again, if they have the availability to walk for either show, please register for both and if selected, a time will be assigned.

Rehearsal is Mandatory!  If models cannot attend rehearsal, unfortunately they will be unable to walk in the show.  The rehearsal will be approximately 1 1/2 - 2 hours and will be between 12 - 5pm on Saturday, October 28th.  Exact rehearsal times will be determined after both casts have been decided.

Fitting is mandatory as this is when each models' look will be assigned!  To participate, models must be able to attend one of the scheduled times.  The tentative fitting dates/times are: October 15th from 12-5 and 16th 11-8 (15 min. increments).  Final details will be confirmed once casts are decided.

Models must be comfortable changing in and out of looks, in front of other models in same room, with the assistance of a Coordinator of the same gender.  We will have separate dressing rooms for male and female.  For the very young models (approximately 1-5 yrs of age) we require that a parent be available to dress them and stay with them backstage during the show.  Due to space limitations, all models over 5 will need to be comfortable backstage during the show without a parent.

All models selected must be comfortable walking on the runway either alone or with another person, possibly of opposite gender.  If there are Coaches, Referees, Administration, etc. who have a young child under 5 and you are registering them for consideration, it would be great if you signed up to model as well.  This way you can walk with your child.
Thank you for registering for consideration to help make the first annual, Heartland Soccer Association's Rock the Runway 2017 Fashion Show, an event to remember! Our goal is to make this an amazing experience for everyone involved so if you have any questions at all, please do not hesitate to contact Wendy Reyes at wendy.reyes@heartlandsoccer.net

Don't forget, for those wanting to purchase tickets to see the show

 The Referee Corner:
Player SAFETY is job #1 but incidents sometimes happen

Did you have the opportunity to go to either of the last two Open Cup matches at Children's Mercy Park?  If you did, then you observed an incident in both matches where a player was carried off the field on a stretcher following contact while challenging for the ball.  In the match against Minnesota a player from both teams attempted to head the ball.  The Sporting player jumped higher and the Minnesota player hit his head on the Sporting player's chest.  He went down and the Referee stopped play because of the injury.  In the Dallas match, the Dallas forward was attempting a bicycle kick (his only real option to score in that situation).  The Sporting defender tried to head the ball (his job was to prevent the shot on goal).  The result was a kick in the head.  The Dallas forward received a caution for a Reckless play, and the Sporting player was taken off the field on a stretcher.  His goal wasn't to hurt the Sporting player, but that was the result.

No one wants to see a player hurt in a soccer match.  In the picture to the left (a Heartland match) it looks bad, but there wasn't contact.  The Mentor who was helping the Referee asked the Referee what he saw.  No contact - no foul was the Referee's response.  The Mentor offered another option for consideration by the Referee in the future - whistle the player in white for Playing in a Dangerous Manner.  While there was no contact in this incident, there was potential that contact could happen and if it did it could hurt.
The elimination of deliberate heading in the U-11 and below age groups has resulted in more plays like the one in the picture (an unintended consequence of the rule change).  We are instructing our Referees to deal with this kind of play by whistling for the infraction (playing in a dangerous manner) and awarding the Indirect Free Kick.  Calling the foul consistently could change player behavior and result in a SAFER match for the players.  That is the purpose of the Laws of the Game.

We must admit that not every Referee will make this call every time.  We will continue to work with all our officials to increase the number of correct decisions on playing in a dangerous manner.  Let your coaches know how you think we are doing.

Enjoy the Fall season.  May it be a SAFE one for your players.

Congrats to all our referees who were honored at the Sporting KC game at Children's Mercy Park.

August 11-13, 2017, Heartland Soccer Association will give teams their first opportunity to get early games in before fall league play begins with the Fall Kick Off Challenge.

In its 8th year, this is the newest tournament to Heartland which features three levels of play (Gold, Silver and Bronze). In addition to providing excellent competition, this newest addition is formatted to be particularly family friendly. The tournament will be hosted at the Scheels Overland Park Soccer Complex and the new world class Wyandotte Sporting Fields. Both are central locations with many hotel, restaurant and entertainment options to suit every team budget and taste.

Heartland's tournaments continue to grow and attract teams from all around the region. This 2017 tournament is the largest Fall Kick Off  Challenge to date as it will welcome in 246 teams from 5 states; Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska.

With teams traveling in from all over the KC metropolitan area and various states, the economic impact is expected to be $1.1 million over the weekend.

"Adding the Fall Kick Off Challenge to our tournament series has been a great way to get the kids excited and back into the swing of things before the fall season begins," said Shane Hackett, Heartland Soccer Association executive director. " We are so proud of how much this tournament has grown in such a short amount of time."

The first set of games will start at 5:00PM on Friday. Saturday and Sunday games will begin at approximately 7:00AM with the award ceremonies set for Sunday early evening.

Up next for Heartland will be the Heartland Midwest Classic at the Scheels Overland Park Soccer Complex, which is expected to bring in nearly 250 teams. The tournament is set for Labor Day weekend, September 1-3rd with
no games on Labor Day.

Dear All,

Wow, the summer went by fast and soccer is back up and running again. We sincerely hope you had a great time with your families while the kids were off school.

We are extremely excited to get the season started and again we want to that you all for supporting our league. We had remarkable numbers of teams sign up and it is so fantastic to see how many players are loving our sport.

One thing that is really awesome this Fall, is that we have the use of another 'State of the Art' turf soccer complex for our games. That is the Sporting Fields up in Wyandotte County, These fields are about a mile from the new National Training Center and a few miles from Children's Mercy Park. That gives our players the chance to drive past those facilities to and from their games and emulate their heroes on the field.

As always, we ask for your patience and good sportsmanship whenever you are in attendance at the games. The players, referees and coaches will make mistakes, they don't do them on purpose, but they are human after all. Please just sit back and enjoy watching your children play and grow within the spirit of the game.

Thanks again and we hope to see you all at the fields.

Sincerely,

Heartland Soccer Staff

Recruiting and Mentor Update
Getting ready for the Fall 2017 Season:

 Getting ready for the Fall 2017 Season:
Last month we asked you to help us recruit new Referees for the Heartland Referee family to help us support the continued growth of soccer in the Kansas City Metro.  Entry Level Classes for new Referees for 2018 started up in mid-July on both sides of the state line.  Almost 300 new Referee candidates have signed up and/or completed the class so far.  This may sound like a large number, but with a drop-out rate of over 50% for Referees in year 2 this number just keeps us at status quo.  The good news is that the young players who signed up for the classes (most are 12 - 14 years old) want to be close to the game they love, to have their first job, and do the best job they can.  With help from our coaches and you the fans we hope to increase the retention rate and start getting ahead in our numbers to support your growth.
One of the programs your Board of Directors has approved to address improved Referee performance and retention is the Peer Mentor Program which is now in its 4 th year.  Their investment is to improve the skills of the Referees assigned to Heartland matches so they can deliver an even better soccer experience for you, our Heartland customers.
The continued sophistication of the game accelerated by knowledgeable coaches, the increased skills of players, and the increased demands of the fans have allowed us to identify opportunities to improve the current Referee Development Program. Referees are critical to SAFE and FAIR soccer play.  While Heartland wants a higher number of experienced Referees, Heartland like all other leagues has some common challenges.
  • Many newly certified, eager, but inexperienced Referees (many start at age 12)
  • It takes time and experience for new Referees to develop their skills
  • Lack of experience affects Referee confidence and results in a less effective officiating result
  • Coaches, players and fans demand effective Referees.  If they don't have confidence in the Referee's effort and performance, they will criticize and complain.  This drives new Referees away and perpetuates the problem.
Referees develop skills and effective judgement through match experience.  Development is accelerated when feedback from more experienced Referees is included.  The Mentoring Program creates a positive environment for learning by focusing on game situations.
The process is that new Referees are observed by a Referee Mentor on the field of play and receive a written evaluation outlining strengths and areas for improvement against defined skills. The Mentors work with the Referee to help them to better understand their responsibilities and decisions so they can develop even more positive skills, delivering a better product for the players, coaches and fans.
Mentors don't change the calls that are made on the field.  What they do is help the new Referees to understand their options and then learn to make even better calls the next time.  I think you would agree that the Referee appearance is getting better every season and you should be seeing higher work rates in both the center Referee and the Assistant Referees.  We thank you for your continued patience and support to grow both the number of Referees and their on-the-field performance.  Enjoy the Fall 2017 Season.

Health Tip
20 Essentials for Your First-Aid Kit

You should always keep a first-aid kit in your home. It should be kept within easy reach of an adult but should be stored away from children. Having a well-stocked first-aid kit is essential to ensuring the right supplies to deal with an emergency at a moment's notice.

First-aid kits can be purchased at a local drugstore or you can put one together yourself. If you make the decision to make one yourself, chose a container that is spacious and easy to open and carry. Plastic tackle boxes, for example, make great homemade first-aid kit containers.

If you decide to make your own kit, here are 20 essential supplies you will need to make sure to include:
*             A first-aid manual
*             Different sized sterile gauze pads
*             Adhesive tape
*             Band-Aids in several sizes
*             Elastic bandage (like an Ace wrap)
*             Antiseptic wipes
*             Antibiotic ointment
*             Antiseptic solution (like hydrogen peroxide)
*             Acetaminophen and ibuprofen
*             Tweezers
*             Scissors
*             Disposable instant cold packs
*             Alcohol wipes
*             Plastic non-latex gloves
*             Flashlight with extra batteries
*             A blanket
*             Mouthpiece for administering CPR (can be purchased at the drugstore)
*             Calamine lotion
*             A splint
*             Thermometer

Make sure to read the entire first-aid manual to understand how to use the contents of your first-aid kit. Not doing this could put you in a tough situation if there ever came a time to use one of the supplies.
Check your first aid-kit regularly. Some things in your first-aid kit you might not ever use, but some might frequently run out like Band-Aids. Replace the missing items so you have them in the future. A well-kept first-aid kit is a necessity in every home to help you handle an emergency in your household.
